Hi, I'm Rachel Economy

I'm a garden designer, sustainability educator, poet, artist, performer, public speaker, mentor, and YouTuber.

This is my business, Next World Design, a radically sustainable design playspace, here to help you live the next world now.

Here, I support people who long for joy and liberation as they bring thriving, accessible worlds to life, in their gardens, workplaces, and daily lives. I also create poetry, art, videos, and performances to help myself and others survive - and find play within - the world as it is.

Want to create an edible garden, a sustainable workplace, or a more accessible and "values-designed" life? I can help.

About Rachel

Rachel has always been interested in our capacity to create whole worlds, big or small, right where we are.

For over a decade, Rachel has studied and taught ecological gardening and farming, systems thinking, resilient design & change-making, writing & performance, permaculture, group facilitation, maker & homesteader crafts, and embodied nature connection skills. She loves to share and collaborate on these activities with people of all ages. She also loves lists (clearly).

Rachel holds a master’s degree in Social Innovation and Sustainability from Goddard College, where her graduate work developed a framework of “Re-Storyation Design” for re-imagining the stories that live their way into our systems. Her poetry and other writing have been published in Dark Mountain, Animal: A Beast of a Literary Magazine, and elsewhere. In 2021, her first poetry chapbook, The Origins of Streams, was published by Finishing Line Press.

Rachel is a white, bisexual, chronically ill, disabled, cis woman, born in Atlanta on Muskogee land, and currently residing in California’s bay area on Coast Miwok land. She believes passionately in weaving together the pragmatic, playful, and imaginative realms of life. She delights in the senses as the bridge between self-body and world-body, and knows that we cannot talk about/with land and community, without also talking about justice, liberation, and thriving for every body in the human and more-than human realms.

Rachel lives with her best friend and colleague, Juniper the Dog (see below).
